night time routine

The teacher in me has come out at home. Our night time routine is not working out as good as it usually does. I have taken pictures of Drew doing all of the things he has to do before bedtime...brushing his teeth, bath, getting his pjs on, etc. I am making a poster so he can visually see what he has to do. Maybe it won't be such a fight each night.

We are REALLY struggling in the "sleep in your own bed" area. He refuses to. He comes into our room a million times a night. Everything I read says not to let him in our bed. So we made a bed on the floor next to our bed. If he comes into our room, that is where he can sleep. Or he can go back to his own bed. I keep thinking that he will realize it is not comfortable on the floor and go back to his bed, but he LOVES it! He especially likes the fact that he is sleeping next to Milo. Any suggestions???

Hi Kelly - It's your cousin Carrie.

Here's some thoughts:

1. I saw the same scenario on SuperNanny (or Nanny911). The mom was to tell the child that he must sleep all night in his own bed. Everytime he woke up in the night, the mom was to walk the boy back to bed with no words, no hugs, no real interaction. It took a couple of nights with trips back and forth, but it eventually worked. (I've only seen about 2 episodes of the show, but that happened to be one.)

my thoughts:
1. could you get Milo to sleep in his room?
2. I'd get him (or let him pick out) a Thomas (or something else) pillow, or pillow-case, or blanket, or something else he'd like. Then say that he needs to stay in bed with "the item" all night long.
3. Tell him that Mom and Dad made a mistake by letting him sleep on the floor. Because Mom or Dad could wake up in the night and accidentally step on him. So he really needs to be a big boy and go back to his own bed.
4. If it all goes bad, I'd give him the choice of a)sleeping in his big bed or b)returning to the crib. (I've also known people who have put up a gate at the door.)

Good luck. Each kid is so different, so I hope something works out easily for you.

HaHa. No. Ellie never sleeps! We have tried EVERYTHING. Just know that we are right there with you. It is exhausting. I love the poster idea though. ;o) Just wanted to see how you were doing too. xo,
